The Chronicle Herald - Halifax, Nova Scotia

April 2005 - Roger Farina (NHL's Inaugural 7th Man Fan of the Year in 2003)
We recently had the pleasure of being contacted by Roger Farina. He is an extremely devoted Hockey fan and is the co-creator of Fans Strike Back! Some of you may know Roger as the NHL's Inaugural 7th Man Fan of the Year in 2003. He has been seen on the Today Show, Fox and Friends and had the honor of dropping the puck at Game 1 of the 2003 Stanley Cup Finals. Roger also reigned as Commissioner for a day. This included a luncheon meeting with Commish Bettman. Many fine points were made by Roger except maybe when his love for The Islanders took over and he recommended that Bettman disband the NY Rangers. He actually wanted to have the dispersal draft at 3 o'clock that afternoon. We Zambonis respect his effort and love for the game and have given him the world premiere of our new anti-NHL Lockout song called "Just Play". The version he has up is not the finished version but you get the idea....Just Play (what do you expext us to watch basketball?) check out his site at www.nonhllockout.com.

February 2005 - The Zambonis  have achieved a career milestone with our debut feature in the holy grail of hockey, The Hockey News!!

Weekend of August 14 - POST GIG REPORT
A BIG THANKS TO VT, Travis Roy and the O'Connor family !!!! We just returned from a weekend of shows and Wiffle Ball in Jericho, VT. 1 show was a rockin private party with loads of kids and a great bunch of host. 1 show was a concert in support of the Travis Roy Foundation. Travis was paralyzed 11 seconds into his 1st shift skating for Boston University. Please checkout TRAVIS ROY FOUNDATION. We met Travis this past weekend for the first time and we are happy to say he ROCKS !!! The whole event was organized by Pat O'Connor and his family. Pat built a small replica of famed Fenway Park in his backyard and held a Wiffle Ball Tournament/Fund Raiser. Pat and his family put on a wonderful event. We played LIVE in Centerfield of Mini Fenway. Below we have photo and video highlights from the weekend. HEY VERMONT !!! We just want to say thank you to all who supported us not only this past weekend but since we started playing up that way years ago. Even though we live in CT, VT is darn close to our home ice.

Ps In the Celebrities Vs The Sponsors Wiffle ball game Dave and Matt from The Zambonis both cranked 2 homers each over the Green Monster. Final score Celebs 16 Sponsors 8

Thursday August 5th - The Zambonis Win Best Rock Band !!!
Outpacing other bands by "hundreds of votes," The Zambonis have won "Best Rock Band" in The Fairfield County Weekly's (our "alternative" newspaper) Grand Band Slam!!

To celebrate our victory, we will perform LIVE at The Temple Bar (120 Bedford Street/downtown) Stamford, CT on Thursday August 5th at 9 p.m. (203) 708-9000. Also performing: Jaws (Best Country Rock Band) and Electric Hill (Best Soul Group).

ZAMBONIS to be FEATURED on ESPN's SportsCenter!!!! This Friday night (July 30) at 6 p.m./11 p.m. and repeated throughout the night/morning, the extremely smart ESPN folks are featuring stories on the "sports/music connection." They'll be mentioning the "Very cool, savvy all-hockey band, The Zambonis," showing a live clip of the band, as well as playing our song, "Bob Marley and The Hartford Whalers." Look for more Zamboni stuff coming soon on ESPN.com. We will keep you updated.

Saturday July 10  Freddy’s in Brooklyn, HERE WE COME!! Let’s just say it: WE LOVE FREDDY’S!!! We played here once and just loved it. We are on at 10 pm. FYI: The Village Voice called it, "The Best Brooklyn Bar." Freddy's Bar & Backroom is located at: 485 Dean Street, Brooklyn. (718) 622-7035.

July 10th - POST GIG REPORT: OOOH, new songs. We Zambonis gave ourselves a challenge for this gig and that was to play a whole bunch of new songs. I remember growing up and going to see REM and then Pavement and when they would play a song you never heard before it was like an awesome secret between you and the band. Some of the new tracks we premiered at this gig were

1) "I Never Lived" (a song about Jon from The Zambonis wife and the Stanley Cup)

2) "That's Good" (we literally wrote this one 3 days before the gig and played it at the gig)

3) Bob Marley and The Hartford Whalers (We dug this one up and sort of reworked it a bit. I am pretty sure we have not played this live since Kevin Dineen wore a Whaler jersey)

Another highlight was our friend Kevin coming out from behind his computer (he has an awesome website called insidehockey.com) and playing keyboards with us on a few songs. He also filled in for the missing hockey monkey (guy in a monkey suit who comes to all our gigs) For the fear of causing waves with our mascot/hockey monkey, Kevin wore a $15 lion mask forcing us to sing the new classic "Hockey Lion". Again, thanks to all who came down to lovely Brooklyn.
Check out this fan site for more on the gig

June 5th - NYC's The Living Room POST GIG REPORT: This was a very sweet night. We thought being on at midnight might keep some folks away but, its fricken NYC. People were just getting up. 6 GREAT things about the gig. 1) one of our SUPERFANS Bob K from Philadelphia debuting his new Zambonis/Hockey Monkey jersey. He paid around $230 to make this classic jersey. In Hartford Whaler colors to boot. The front logo is a classic drawing from our friend and co-writer of the song Hockey Monkey James Kochalka. The back is a big old 92 representing the year we decided to write songs solely about hockey. 2) Our new best friend and part time Zamboni member Tom Tater playing bass. Tom was fearful of a hostile NY crowd, Tom chose to rock with a shield. 3) We brought out the old 1966 Farfisa compact organ and she sounded as good as she did back then. Whether in a hockey arena or at a hockey concert, you just cant beat a hockey organ 4) A flawless performance from the rarely seen Saskatchewan hockey monkey (now living in Queens) Whether in a hockey arena or at a hockey concert, you just cant beat a guy in a monkey suit. 5) Game 6 of the Stanley Cup going into double OT and then finishing exactly 8 minutes before we had to go on. There is a god and He (George Burns) loves hockey. And Tampa. And us. 6) Everyone who came to the show. Thanks for comin from Ohio, Boston, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Queens, Da Bronx and the rest of ya. THANKS ! Your the best !

Saturday May 15 Stamford, CT @ Jimmy's Seaside. A punk-rockin’ evening with The Zambonis, Elvis McMan and The Boardlords (a skater band). We are on around 9—don’t be late. 891 Cove Rd. Stamford, CT (203) 964-9225.

Saturday May 22 NYC @ Siberia. 40th St. & 9th Ave. (black door, red light)  9pm  Dickvandick  10pm  THE ZAMBONIS  11pm America’s Sweethearts. 12pm  Navar  $5 @ the door. Call (212) 333-4141.

ZAMBONIS GO CORPORATE !!!!  We were featured on the front page of The WALL STREET JOURNAL Monday April 19th!!! And it wasn’t for our impressive knowledge of Keynesian economics, either. The article was titled, "Dropping The Gloves, Picking Up Guitars". We were obviously psyched about them talking about our reggae lament, "Bob Marley and The Hartford Whalers" and also honored at this quote: "The Zambonis of Bridgeport, Conn., have had the most commercial success as pure hockey rockers." Look for an upcoming feature in either Forbes, Fortune or Barron’s (kidding).  It actually blows our minds that after 12 years of writing nothing but hockey songs, we have been featured in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Sports Illustrated, The Wall Street Journal—yet we have been entirely ignored by The Hockey News. Go figure.Check out the article here

Feb 1st - WE WON !!! Thanks to our AWESOME FANS, we recently won a contest sponsored by Ruckus Sound& Style. The contest rules were, the band who got the most email request by their fans (1 vote per email) would get them a spot on a new cd compilation put out by Ruckus. According to the Ruckus people, "The Zambonis were the overwhelming winners"! The CD is out and we have a freshly recorded shiny new hockey song on it. The song is titled "Here We Go Again". The only place you can get this cd is at our live shows or you can email us. They are very limited. This song will be featured on our next cd possibly titled "Whacky Singin Hockey Nutz". Thanks again to all who voted for us!!!!

Feb 1st - Fa Fa Fabulous!!! We have just learned that one of our favorite bands Guster will be using our song called "Guster Plays Hockey" on their new live DVD. It is also rumored that Dave from The Zambonis gets a little face time in some backstage stuff with Guster and The Barenaked Ladies. We hope by using our song the Gusters will gain a bit more exposure and then stop playing smaller venues like Radio City Music Hall and move on to playing live in Baseball / Football stadiums like The Beatles, Guns and Roses and of course Sir Robbie Williams. Sunday December 7th - ARENA AT HARBOR YARD (B-PORT)
(before the Bridgeport Sound Tigers take on the Hartford Wolfpack)
This is a special, ultra-fun gig on our home ice. The Zambonis will be playing a pre-game rally-rocking set inside the lobby at the Arena. After The Zambonis rock the rink, (ok, food court/concession area) the extremely hot American Hockey League Bridgeport Sound Tigers will be taking on their tough intrastate not-so-good-looking and unkempt archrivals the Hartford Wolfpack. For those unfamiliar with these teams, that's the NY Islanders affiliate team vs. the NY Rangers affiliate. There is also a big game at the arena at 1:00 between the Bridgeport Fire Dept. and the Hartford Fire Dept. That's way too much hockey for some, but we challenge you to partake in all of these events. For directions to the arena click here. You can also check out Dave from The Zambonis "Dave's Place" on the Sound Tigers Website. A new interview with Bridgeport's nice guy/enforcer Jody Robinson will be up any day now.

Thursday December 4th - THE ZAMBONIS LIVE 2:30 PM on NHL LIVE on NHL.COM
For the first time since the 2002 NHL All Star Game, The Zambonis have been called up to the NHL. They will be talking hockey, music and playing a song or two live on a show called NHL LIVE. This is a daily show broadcast from NYC in conjunction with Sirius Satellite Radio on NHL.COM. Sound Tigers game in Bridgeport and hockey rock in New Haven--could life get any better?

November 13th - ZAMBONIS LIVE IN NYC
TRIBECA ROCK CLUB 16 Warren St. b/w Church & Broadway. Sure, it's a Thursday, but think of it as getting an odd-man rush to your weekend. We are on @ 9:30. The other bands rock our hockey socks off: Rana, This Radiant Boy and Sam Champion. The gig doubles as a birthday party for a cool friend known as: "Jersey Dan." He's from Jersey. See ya there!

October 18th - Zambonis live at Rudy's in New Haven, CT
We are playing at 11pm sharp at Rudy's Bar and Grill in New Haven, CT. Its going to be a cool night of music with special guest Groovski. They are a melodic Polish punk rock group with a huge fondness for the movie Jaws and no songs about hockey. Their is a Bridgeport Sound Tiger's game the night before. As some of you know, Dave from The Zambonis is the on ice MC for the New York Islanders farm team, the Sound Tigers. The fine folks from Rudy's Bar and Grill have agreed to give anyone a free Rudy's Draft beer (or soda) in exchange for a ticket stub from Fridays Sound Tiger game. Make it an all hockey weekend. Sound Tigers game in Bridgeport on Friday night, Saturday cruise over to RUDY'S for some classic hockey rockage.

September 27th - POST GIG REPORT: What can we say except BROOKLYN IN DA RINK!!! This show was a complete surprise to us. We heard all these different opinions of this venue. One of our friends said it was to small and spooky, and another friend said it was a really cool place with great toasted sandwiches and a groovy stage. Lucky for us, it was the latter. What an awesome little venue and a really fun show. We actually want to and will get back there soon. A great crowd showed up decked out in a fine assortment of jerseys. We debuted our new old school country classic "Hockey Heart." Do to lack of space on the stage, our drummer Matt stripped down the kit to a snare drum, a kick drum and 1 cymbal (Stray Cats Style) He did the stand up drummer thing all night and he said he had worse cramps in his leg than all the woman that attended the Lilith Fair in the year 2000. Another fun moment was someone yelling "play a song about curling" Dave heard it as "Take The Skinheads Hurling." The band proceeded to play a rockin' albeit misconstrued cover of the classic Camper Van Beethoven song "Take The Skinheads Bowling".

September 27th - Finally, We are playing in Brooklyn!! Home of New York's premiere women's ice hockey team The Brooklyn Blades Sept 27 @ Petes Candy Store. This place is smaller than a penalty box so get there early!! We are on the ice at 10pm The joint is located at 709 Lorimer St Williamsburg, Brooklyn for info call 718 302 3770 See ya there in hockey gear!

September 1st - Click here for a great feature written on us in The Fairfield Minuteman Press

September 1st - We recently joined Guster in the studio to do back up vocals on a brand new track called "Donde Es Christmas?" It will be coming out on a great Holiday compilation cd. Other featured artist are THE FLAMING LIPS, Dave Matthews and many more. The song is crazy, fun, spooky yet beautiful. Thanks to the Gusters for a fun session.

August 29th - POST GIG REPORT: WOW!!!! What a great gig. This was definitely in our top 5 shows of our career. The room was packed to the gills (about 700) It was hotter than hot. We have never sweat more at a gig than this. To make things a little hotter, the coolest vintage jersey company in the world called Mitchell and Ness gave us 4 brand spankin new Authentic Jerseys to wear at this gig. A Vancouver Canucks 85 V jersey. We call it the "Captain Kirk on left wing" jersey. Dave Schultz Flyers jersey, Vancouver white, Green, Blue with the stick logo and the classic red, white and blue Washington Caps jersey with all the stars and stuff. The jerseys are really heavy and beautiful but they breathe as much as your grandfathers wool sweater he got in Ireland in 1955. The company is based in Philadelphia and thankfully, happen to like the bands stuff.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SHOW: 1) Having Atom come up and do 2 songs with us. In honor of our man Atom calling it a day we had our creative merch-girl/back up vocalist/critic/ make a pinata in Atom's likeness. It was amazing how she nailed it. Just by chance, Atom wore the same Phillies hat as we put on the pinata. IT was that kinda night. Perfect. Check out the pics of Pinata, Atom and Dave. Atom had the first and second whack at the Pinata but failed to even knock out but 1 blow pop or smarty. Dave went next to no avail as did Tarquin. Through all these hard whacks Matto (drummer/goon/copy writer) was holding the hockey stick that had the Atom pinata dangling from it. Turns out Melissa used some serious amount of glue building the head of Atom. Finally, Peter Katis (producer/guitar/defense) just ripped the Atom head apart. The crowd was sweating so much from the heat we saw a sudden surge of sugar boost. Tip to bands in the future, if playing a very hot club, PINATA filled with water bottles and candy.

MORE HIGHLIGHTS: Jenna and her dad comin down from Washington DC. Jenna is a 7 year old Zamboni fan who was decked out in her mites uniform including the helmet. When we asked if anyone knew the words to our song "Hockey Monkey" her dad held her up as she nodded yes. Dave grabbed her from the crowd, put her on the stage and the band went on to do hockey monkey with 7 year old Jenna on lead vocals and the band and other assorted fans doing back ups. Next Highlight: a guy we met that night through our top fan BOB K, Stan the man with removable front teeth (of course do to a hockey collision) joining the band for a spirited version of "Lost My Teeth". Thanks to all who came out (KILTS, Heather) and really big ups to our friend ATOM and His Package. We will sorely miss playing shows with him. Good news is that Atom will be releasing a DVD of the show and we will be featured doing 2 songs with Atom and some extra bonus footage of the infamous ATOM PINATA.

August 29th - Philadelphia YAHOO!!!! Finally we get back to Flyer town!!! This is a special show. Our friend Atom has been the leader of a band called Atom and His Package for about 6 years. They are an amazing, smart, catchy band and are one of our all time faves. THEY ARE ALSO PLAYING THEIR LAST SHOW EVER THIS NIGHT. We Zambonis are psyched/honoured that Atom asked us to play at his last gig. As usual, we will be doing some songs with Atom in our set. SEE YOU THERE!!! We are on around 9pm. The show is at The First Unitarian Church located at 22nd and Chestnut in Philadelphia, PA. You can get directions at r5productions.com. Ticket prices are $8 advance / $8 day of show.

August 23rd - POST GIG REPORT: Another way to fun night at the acoustic Cafe in Bridgeport, CT. 2 great bits about this gig were our new friend and live guest Rev Dave on organ. The man can play anything and it sounds good. Being the the actual leader of several church choirs he was decked out in a black choir robe with a vintage Toronto Maple Leafs jersey over the robe. (fitting as the Leafs have so many devout fans)

The other classic whacky Zambonis moment was inviting Katzu Imazeki (a Professional Japanese Baseball Pitcher of 6 years and now playing in the Independent league for the Bridgeport Bluefish) to come and do Hockey Monkey with the band in Japanese. He knew the song from listening to it on his Sony Playstation game NHL HITZ 2003. He also held up signs leading the crowd with the chorus of the song, (ichi, ni, san, the kids love the monkey and shi, go, roku the monkeys got a hockey stick shichi, hachi, ku havin a good time yeah) FUN FUN FUN!!

Checkout this great feature on the band in the Fairfield Minuteman Press.

August 23rd - Bridgeport, CT - The Acoustic Cafe. Saturday night/hockey night 9:00 Showtime $8 admission. Its only $8 Very special guest Jed Parrish. Jed is the lead singer for one of our favorite bands called Gravel Pit. They are originally from New Haven but have been based out of Boston long enough to be known as a Boston band. Jed and the Gravel Pit have won numerous awards as Bostons best band. His voice alone is unbelievable. The other important fact you need to know about Jed is that like we Zambonis, he is a huge fan of The Kinks. Do yourself a favor and go buy either one of these two Cds by the Kinks, "Something Else" or "Villiage Green Preservation Society".
